Get Involved - Join a Local Board or Commission

Do you know who is making decisions on how your city is governed? In many cases, decisions start at a local board or commission long before they are brought to the City Council or Mayor.

These boards and commissions are made up of resident volunteers with interest or expertise in the area the board oversees and as a REALTOR®, there are many boards and commissions that fall directly in your area of expertise. That might include a Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Downtown Development Authority, Housing Commission, or others, depending on where you live!

Volunteering your time to one of the many boards and commissions in your municipality is one of the best ways of not only helping your government, but it is a way of ensuring REALTORS® interests are represented.

As a REALTOR® you work every day to help your clients find the perfect place to call home. You know intimately how decisions made by a municipality can make the community a better place to live or make it harder for someone to buy their dream house.

By joining a board or commission, you will not only make a difference in your community, but your clients will see that you are an expert on the community in which you live and work.

The appointment process for boards and commissions varies by municipality. If you are interested in being appointed to a board of commission, GMAR can advocate for your appointment on your behalf.

GMAR encourages all our members to be involved in their community. If you are interested in learning what positions are available in your community or how to get involved in one, please contact GMAR’s Political Engagement Director Alex Haddad at alex@gmaronline.com
